1.1 Video Essay

This is my video essay for 1.1 which shows the cuts and transitions in film/media.

This is a document of the industry examples I found of cuts and transitions and the script I stuck by whilst talking over the Video.

1.2 The Academy

This video shows the style of interviews we would like to produce for our Academy project. We have a two camera set up, one up close and one to the side showing the wider shot with the two lights.

1.3 Production

Raw Footage

This is our raw footage for the academy shoot, We filmed training, coaching and b roll this day and I have compiled some of the footage into this video.

Offline Edit

This is the offline edit for Bristol Inner City Football Academy. In this edit, I have followed the structure we would like for the actual documentary and put place holders in for the interviews that matched the same camera angles. I have added in cross devolves and dips to black to help transition between clips. Some of the feedback we received was making the drone shots shorter so it isn't so long to watch. Another piece of feedback was to choose some better training footage as most of it was focussed on the drills and not the coaching.

Logging Footage

This is how I organised my footage, green being the more usable clips and orange being the less usable.

This is the behind the scenes of the Patrick Williams, Brian Tinnion and Damian Butt interviews we did. The equipment we had for the interviews was 2 cameras, 2 lights, 5 tripods (2 for the cameras, 2 for the lights and 1 for the mic), a mic and a tascam. It took us roughly 5 minutes to set up, 10 minutes to do the interviews and 5 minutes to pack up.

Final Documentary

1.4 Project Evaluation

For the Bristol Inner City Football Academy unit (CDM 325), I created a 4 minute documentary showing the inner workings of the academy. At the beginning of this unit, I made a video essay showing some of the cuts and transitions that are used in film and TV and to make this, I had to produce my own examples of each cut (for example I recorded a round about for 5 minutes to show the passing of time with a jump cut). I also found some industry examples of cuts and transitions from other academy documentaries.

Next was 1.2, which was the pre-production for the Academy, for this I made an elevator pitch, which were the first ideas we had for the documentary, a film treatment, which showed in writing the content, idea outline, house style, target audience, etc. After this, we made some rough interview examples showing the camera angles we wanted and what we would like Patrick to say. Then, we made a production schedule, location recce, storyboard, shot list and a script with questions. These pieces of pre-production show who we want to interview (being Patrick Williams, Damian Butt and Brian Tinnion), the days we will be interviewing and recording on, the location and how we need to prepare in advance as we didn’t have access to power and what we will be recording.

After this, I moved onto 1.3 production which includes raw footage, an offline edit, logging footage, behind the scenes and the final documentary. The raw footage is just some unedited footage of the BIC training day that I compiled together, the offline edit shows the structure I would like for the documentary and the interview style that we would be going for. The logging footage is just screenshots of the way I organised the footage, which is in named folders and colour coded files green being better than orange. The behind the scenes pictures I took just show the set ups we had for each interview and these were a two camera set up with a mic on the  floor in-front of the interviewee and two lights either side of the interviewee.

Finally, the finished documentary is the vision we had at the start of this project and I have no problems with the way it turned out.

In conclusion, I am very pleased with the outcome of this project, however some parts could have been a lot better, for example on the day of the training we couldn’t fly a drone due to GDPR and data protection as there is a nearby neighbourhood and a big group of people training below the drone. What I learned from this was to get permission to fly a drone before arriving. The next problem we had was with the Damian Butt interview and the location. When we arrived at SGS College, it turned out that we had to go to the sport facility instead so we had to walk 15 minutes to the actual location. In order to prevent this in the future, I would do a location recce and know exactly where we need to be on the day. The final issue we had was when we were filming at BIC and we had to wear football boots to be allowed to go on the pitch although the group that went the day before didn't. In order to prevent this happening again, I will keep in constant contact with future clients so that I know if anything changes. All in all, I am happy with the final outcome of the documentary and Patrick Williams is also pleased with the final product.
